<image:title>Blog - WHAT DOES THERAPY LOOK LIKE? - I come with a problem. It’s a heavy boulder I have been carrying around with me. Sometimes I know what it is. Sometimes I don’t.</image:title>
<image:caption>You can tell I am kind of lumpy, not very defined.I am not sure what’s in this package or that I want to open it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT DOES THERAPY LOOK LIKE? - The boulder or egg gets heavier. It begins to crack. I am holding onto it and maybe putting it down. I am beginning to see what is ins ide.</image:title>
<image:caption>My shoulders are still held high, but I am getting longer and more fluid.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT DOES THERAPY LOOK LIKE? - It cracks apart. The contents spill out. They smell. It’s messy.</image:title>
<image:caption>I am more defined, but also not quite here. You can tell because although I look curious, I am also see through. I get my first look at what’s inside.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT DOES THERAPY LOOK LIKE? - The mess sorts out into different parts that I can pick up and feel. They are part of a common stream. They have sharp edges and can hurt.</image:title>
<image:caption>It breaks apart into different pieces. I begin to pick up the pieces to see and feel them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT DOES THERAPY LOOK LIKE? - Sometimes it makes me feel like I am fragile and cracking. I can do this work because I know I am held and kept safe within the container of therapy. I feel seen with compassion and kindness which makes it possible for me to feel and see the hard parts. I begin to have compassion for these parts of myself that hurt.</image:title>
<image:caption>I am holding my own cracking self in my lap, surrounding this part of myself with love and support for my own being. I am solid and fragmenting at the same time. Eventually I’ll come to the realization that all of this is mine and stop rejecting it as other.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT DOES THERAPY LOOK LIKE? - I am learning to hold myself with care and kindness. I am held in my own darkness, in my own egg. Held in my own arms, my own hand. Held by the container of the therapy time and space and witness. Held in the hand of Spirit greater than me. Held until I am ready to move.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT DOES THERAPY LOOK LIKE? - And here I am. Standing. I have not quite put down the boulder, but it has transformed into tangled lines from different places in my body. Finding my boundaries, standing between sky and earth. I feel strings of attachment to my past, to my present, to my truth.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - REST - I love to walk and sit by the shore as the sun goes down.I love to sit on the jetty, the feeling of solid rock beneath me , surrounded by water and sky, imbibing the awe and magic of light. Sometimes family or friends come with me and it is wonderful to share the beauty. Sometimes I go by myself and settle in to being present with the transition from day to night, feeling the changing colors of the sky and the glory happening. The experience both excites and soothes my body-mind. I am filled with a sense of peaceful happiness. If I miss it I am usually a much more grumpy and busy person in the evening.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What To Do When You Wake In The Morning After A Bad Dream - SKIN BRUSHING Skin brushing is one of my favorite nervous system soothers. I have a variety of vegetable brushes, shoe brushes, bath brushes with varying degrees of soft to stiff feel. I find different people like different degrees of pressure and type of sensation. If you don’t have a brush that feels right, you can do it with the soft palm side of your fingers.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What To Do When You Wake In The Morning After A Bad Dream - STRETCHING, YAWNING, SOUNDING This is my normal getting out of bed in the morning practice. Imagine a cat stretching. Can you see that long connectedness, the languorous reaching limbs, the supple spine (of course, cats do have more vertebrae than we do). I do this before I get out of bed. Or maybe you are more of a play with me puppy-pose, dog-person. Don’t think about the stretches you know. Let the animal of your body move into a stretch that doesn’t have an idea of itself. Let your body move the way it wants to, finding tissues that feel their elasticity until aah or ooh or raaar or some other sound emerges from within the you.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What To Do When You Wake In The Morning After A Bad Dream - WATCHING THE SUN RISE There is something about the predawn light that makes me happy. At my house East is behind the trees. The light, at first, is diffuse and then the lower sky reddens and oranges, until the sun actually peeks above the horizon and through the tree trunks with its golden hues. As the sun ascends the sunlight illuminates the trees one at a time. I can watch it move across the forest into the yard, then onto our deck. That’s when it’s great to step outside and let the sunlight bathe my eyes, my face upturned to awaken my nervous system and skin. If it’s warm enough I step barefoot onto the ground and feel the electromagnetic earth energy through your feet. It brings me back into myself, makes me grateful for the glory of the sun and the beauty of the world, reminds me to be present to what is rather than what happened before.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WAKE AT NIGHT FROM A BAD DREAM - DROP YOUR WEIGHT</image:title>
<image:caption>Relax your focus. Let your eyes soften and close, imagining them dropping back onto a dark velvet cushion where they can rest. Release tension from your tongue. Let it lie on the floor of your mouth. Feel gravity taking your weight through your body towards the ground. Let your weight drop with gravity into the lowest places. Feel the form of your body on the bed while slowing your breath and breathing into your whole body. Stay in this resting state letting your thoughts drift away without holding onto them, returning to the sensations of your body. Let your weight drop without holding onto it. Check that your eyes and tongue remain soft. Feel the support of the bed so that you can release the tension of the dream into the safety of your room.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WAKE AT NIGHT FROM A BAD DREAM - 3-DIMENSIONAL BREATHING</image:title>
<image:caption>Experience your breath. Is your chest expanding to the front, back, and to the sides? Feel your breath slide down the throat into the chest allowing all sides to widen simultaneously. Feel the release of the breath as your chest narrows. Stay in the rhythm of expanding and releasing without effort, following the breath in and out. Feel yourself here, breathing. BELLY BREATHING Place your hand on your belly. Experience your belly expanding when you breath in and falling as you breath out. Stay with the rhythm of the soft, relaxed belly responding to the breath.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WAKE AT NIGHT FROM A BAD DREAM - RESTING YOUR MIND</image:title>
<image:caption>Notice if your thoughts are looping. Let your thoughts drift. Let the weight of your brain drop into the skull. Imagine thoughts as clouds dissipating into the dark of night. Soften the eyes and tongue. Let your thoughts drift by without attaching to them. Or if that is too difficult, write them down so that you can let them go and not need to remember them. <image:title>Blog - KNOW YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM - This is an image of the relationships of the pancreas. The liver is the brownish large shape at the top coming over from under your lower right ribs. (The image is of the insides of a person standing looking at you -so the reverse of how you feel it under your hands) The little bright green shape peeking out from under the liver is the gall bladder. (Bile inside the gall bladder is a bright yellow green color.) The transparent shape in front of the yellow pancreas is the stomach. Transparent just so you can see the pancreas, it’s head snuggled into the duodenum (beginning of the small intestine) and going diagonally back so that it’s tail touches the purple spleen. In front partially covering the lower pancreas is the transverse part of the large intestine and below is more small intestine.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - SOMATIC EXPLORATION: INTRO TO ORGANS - Slightly open your mouth and feel the transition from skin to lip to the lining of the mouth, the mucous membrane at the beginning of your insides. Feel how each place facial skin, lip, and inside the mouth has a different feeling. Close your eyes and imagine the winding 40 feet of wet tube starting in the mouth, narrowing and widening between a half inch and 3 inches, descending, curving, and coiling until it reaches the anus and abuts the external skin again. Your digestive tube is as long as a shipping container or half of a tennis court and it fits inside your torso. It provides a passage through the middle of you, a passage with many stories of physical and chemical change. It is the source of energy, minerals, satiety, fullness, purification, fascination, holding on, letting go, satisfaction, comfort, discomfort, need, desire. It is where we store emotions, where we take in the outside world and change it or tuck it or stuff it. It is the home of gurgles and burps, of farts and poop.</image:title>

Then click on the Breathing Into Your Face audio file. I will lead you through feeling and relaxing your face - the skin, muscles, bones, teeth, and tongue releasing and relaxing. You are going to start by placing your palms on your face.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Relax the Face - And then let your hands lower your face as they support your head. Notice how I have my forearms against my torso helping to brace my hands to support my head. You are letting the weight of the head rest in your hands. Our head and neck are used to moving themselves. Shift to letting the head and neck rest, and the hands be the movers bringing the head down however far is comfortable for you.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Wisdom of the Body - This is an allegorical painting of Wisdom -Wisdom as an elderly woman embodied in the form of the oldest tree in North America, a Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) in the Inyo National Forest in California's White Mountains. She contains and supports all the stages of life within and on her ancient tree form. She holds polarites: old and young, night and day, sun and moon, warm and cold, dead and alive and the elements of earth, water, fire, air, and spirit. She is sitting near a marsh and an estuary, transitional spaces between ocean and land.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Wisdom of the Body - One day I felt my kidneys were like lotus blossoms connected through their waving stems to the bottom of a pond. The bladder as lotus pond, the floating kidneys as blossoms wearing their adrenal party hats, the ureters as stems rising in the internal waters of the body. Other days I do not feel my kidneys as happily holding the lotus form floating on the water’s surface. Some days my kidneys feel like punk rockers in a mosh pit, like they are lost wandering in a fog, or like tense small rodents backed into corners, or containing the force of the wind behind me.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Wisdom of the Body - The title of this art quilt is ‘The Heart of Matter.’ I started by playing with texture. I cut up a felted mitten, used upholstery fabrics, old prints of leaves and leaf forms I had made, silk, and lace. I sewed them together in a pleasing (to me) way and then decided to put them in the center of a 4 x 4 piece of green felt. I put the quilt on my design wall and waited for the next step. The trees/lungs emerged first. Then the heart underneath and the horizontal pulmonary vessels/root from heart to lungs/trees. Roots dangled down and underneath a diaphragm, a bridge, a cave and earthen lumps. I sewed some translucent circles onto the limbs of the tree in honor of the alveoli that are the mediators in the conversation between the sun and leaves and our own internal workings. The sun and moon came to play. The clouds became the pink and violet of twilight. I patterned the leaves on top after the locust tree outside my bedroom window. I quilted patterns of capillaries and wind. If you enlarge the image and look closely you can see the machine quilting and the hand stitching.</image:title>

You may like a pillow or rolled up blanket under your ankles. If you have large breasts a rolled up towel on your upper chest helps relieve the pressure on your breasts. I like to have a pillow or put my hands under my forehead so there is room for my nose when my head is not turned to the side. <image:title>Blog - How Do People Heal? - I recognize the inextricable link of body and mind, the mind in every cell. I believe that healing happens on many levels involving our physical, mental, and etheric bodies. I trust the body-mind to go towards health when given an opportunity and conditions to be able to choose. I know the body-mind heals quicker with the introduction of a possibility for an easier, better way to feel, move, or be.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How Do People Heal? - I have experienced people’s hands helping my body-mind make connections and guiding the cells and tissues of my body to find easier pathways. Bodywork has helped me find relationships within my body-mind that have enabled me to live with more ease, with a greater range of movement and being.</image:title>
<image:caption>I was quite abusive to my body as a dancer and an athlete. I had many injuries that I was encouraged to ignore. When I did get help it was about being fixed so I could go on abusing my body. I have received hand-on work that gave me a sense of being known and encouraged me to know myself, that helped my body re-organize into easier patterns than the ones that had become habits. This understanding through sensing and knowing my own body as a participant in my own healing changed my life. It is not that I am always embodied or that I don’t have impediments to doing this work. It is that I can find my way back to myself or ask for help to find my way to healing both physical and emotional injuries.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Do People Heal? - I feel the healing power of nature and being in communication and presence with other sentient beings organic and inorganic.</image:title>
<image:caption>Being in the woods surrounded by the green and growing world in summer and the hibernating world in winter always makes me feel better. I also settle in myself sitting on rocks or by water, especially sitting on rocks by the water. My body and soul always feel better in or near the ocean. I also grew up loving and being loved by a cat and dog. There is something elemental and healing when in the presence of the nonverbal natural world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Do People Heal? - There is the healing power of community. I experience a web of support from others that is like a life raft in difficult times, that is an amplifier of spirit, that helps me know I am not the only one experiencing life this way.</image:title>
